Morocco, world champion of green hydrogen?

Morocco's ambition is to become the world champion of green hydrogen. In this context, it has just strengthened its partnership with the International Renewable Energy Agency. Eventually, this energy technique could supply Europe and its African neighbours.

Using hydrogen as an energy source does not emit CO2. However, its manufacture is less virtuous; the element is obtained by reforming methane, a process that promotes the greenhouse effect. Another technique, which is used for only 4% of world production, consists of electrolysis, which separates water molecules into two, oxygen on one side and hydrogen on the other. If this electrolysis is itself supplied by 'clean' energy (solar, wind), then the hydrogen produced becomes 'green', as it does not emit CO2.

This explains the agreement between the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) and the Mo... Lire la suite
